10th May 2009........................................Dave Mannington-Bass

Featuring material from their 2008 album release “Headrush” described as”... an
absorbing and oddly compelling album, another quiet triumph for the
consistently intriguing Loop Collective” (Chris Parker Nov ’08). This set will also debut a new collaboration with the fantastic Brigitte Beraha.

Dave Manington studied composition at Nottingham University 94-97, then went on to the Guildhall School of music postgraduate jazz course the following year. Since leaving he has been in demand for a wide range of different ensembles, including jazz, funk, Latin, contemporary classical and Eastern European folk groups.

Dave has composed for and led his own jazz septet for several years, and now leads a quartet, whilst also contributing music to many other peoples projects. He has also accumulated extensive studio experience recording albums and sessions as a sideman. Dave's music has recently been heard on Radio 3 and on television. Performances around the country have seen him playing with luminaries like Mark Lockheart, Pete Wareham, Gwilym Simcock, Pete King, Martin Speake, Alan Barnes, Tim Whitehead, Salena Jones, Roberto Pla, Martin Shaw and John Etheridge amongst others. He's played all around Europe and appeared in the Katmandu jazz festival, Cyprus Paradise jazz, Swanage, London and Brecon jazz festivals over the last few years. He was also nominated for a Worshipful Company of Musicians jazz medal award in 2006.

This dynamic ensemble of young musicians plays original music written by Dave over the course of the past five years. The starting point for the music is collective improvisation but compositionally it draws on as wide a range of styles as possible. Folk, electronic music and “classical” influences as well as contemporary modern jazz harmony can be heard. Often the music has been rewritten many times after rehearsals sent the music spinning off in different directions. Most of the material is through-composed with the themes re-emerging in different forms, different keys, or time signatures. The most important thing for us is to develop a band sound and understanding so each time we play the music can be re-invented together, often quite radically.

“..an emphasis on collective improvisation and less of a focus on individual soloists than you might find in traditional jazz. It also grooves like hell, with Manington's acoustic bass and Giles' sprightly drums laying down some thick, beefy yet, at the same time somehow mercurial riffs – full of stops, starts, wrong turns and dead ends, yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum..” JAZZWISE nov '06
